Located on a dark, mostly deserted stretch of back road that is heavily wooded and sits right between RD#2 and Buck Mountain.
Until 1966 when the church itself finally burned down, St. Joseph's Catholic church sat at the edge of the cemetery. The congregation fled the church in 1875, leaving the cemetery in its wake.
The cemetery is unkempt, tall grass and weeds protrude throughout its grounds. Headstones, hundreds of years old teeter and bend under the weight of years of neglect. The Catholic church stopped maintaining the final resting place of members of its church and community years ago, leaving it up to the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus to do what it can. Even they will not venture far into this so-called haunted cemetery, they only cut the grass seen from the road and not an inch more! Many folks wonder why?
All sorts of claims have been reported from the sounds of children singing and laughing, the ever present mysterious shadows, the glowing red eyes of an Indian seen from the tree line to deceased children hanging from the lampposts. Most visitors only attempt to enter during daylight. Other legends include a white horse seen running through the area, to a ghost car that can be seen driving by from time to time. There have also been reports of people having mechanical difficulties with their cars once they leave the cemetery... One theory is that these ghosts are restless and angry because the Catholic Church has chosen to abandon them at a time when their lives should still be celebrated. You, decide... By: Dana Landers
