Shupp's Cemetery
At one time, this section of Larksville was a part of Plymouth. Shupp's Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Plymouth, with burials dating back to the early late 1700's
Shupp's Cemetery was a public burial ground for over 150 years. The land originally belonged to Peter Shupp and family, who were early pioneers. Nothing is known as to what sort of burial records were kept on the cemetery. Over the last 29 years, the Plymouth Historical Society has compiled info on over 300 burials. The actual number of burials is unknown, but, thought to be well over 1,000. Public burials were halted in the early 1900's due to the fact that people were burying the dead in shallow graves on top of other burials. It was common for heavy rains to expose a part of a corpse. The Boston Colliery, which was located next to the cemetery even donated top soil and coal waste to add fill to the cemetery. Many of the burials were infants and young children who perished in the epidemics that struck the Wyoming Valley. Such as, typhoid fever in 1885, small pox in 1902 and the Spanish flu in 1918. Also, the cemetery is recorded to have been built on or near an ancient Indian burial ground. In the 1740's, the Shawnee Indians referred to the burial ground as being ancient Indians.
